What is today Barcelona City?

Postcards Barcelona 1922
Photo of Barcelona

  • "By the end of the 19th and early 20th century, Barcelona became one of the cities where the modernist movement developed more strength and personality. Painters, artists, and architects left a mark in the city that they have frised forever the idiosyncrasy of Barcelona. The city was lucky enough to tell, among their children, with genius and immortal Antoni Gaudí, maximum exponent of Catalan modernism."

  • "In 1909, Barcelona suffered the so-called "Tragic Week," serious obbriny disorders driven by the way of recruiting troops for the war of Morocco.

Starting in 1909, they started two decades of great prosperity. Supply to belligerent powers in the First World War enriched the Barceonese bourgeoisie. At the end of the war there was a time of crisis that would pass to history by the hard shocks between the employer and the anarchist movement."

How did Barcelona lived from 1922?

  • "In 1923 Barcelona lived a state coup of Gen. Primo de Rivera, who silenced the working movements. The city lived an economic growth season, which allowed the headquarters of its second International Exhibition in 1929.

  • With the proclamation of the Spanish Republic II in 1931, Barcelona retrieved Generality by enacting the 1932 Autonomy Statute.

During the Civil War, Barcelona was on the Republican side that he suffered the bombing of the nationalists to the end of the war.

  • With the end of the war, Barcelona was one of the most economically benefited cities by the regime, favoring industrialization. His economic development between 1960 and 1975 was spectacular.

With the end of General Franco’s dictatorship and the democratic period began, Barcelona regained the Generality and autonomic centralism of Catalonia. Economic bonanza, due largely to the entrance of Spain in the European Union, allowed the city to organize the 1992 Olympics.

The Olympic Games has promoted Barcelona worldwide and today the city is one of the world’s leading tourist destinations.

  • Currently, Barcelona is a modern, open and tolerant city, transformed, by own merits, in a cosmopolitan capital that has everything that a city can dream: good weather, sea, beach, port – which receives the largest number of cruises from Europe- , a modern airport and fair centers and congresses.
