The first postage stamp was the Penny Black, (One Penny Black), which appeared in England on May 6, 1840. The idea was that of Sir Rowland Hill, member of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, so that the sender would pay the tariff, because before the creation of the seal, the recipient is the paid, creating a huge number of returns.

Although the post office in Portugal was created in 1520, by D. Manuel I, due to the need to quickly deliver the enormous flow of parcels, letters, documents or objects, which was felt in Portugal due to the Portuguese Discoveries, the stamps arrived to Portugal on July 1, 1853, the first Portuguese stamp being the bust of D. Maria II, a seal designed by King D. Fernando himself, husband of D. Maria II. (D. Fernando was also the architect and interior designer of Palácio da Pena, Sintra).

Thus, Portugal was the 45th country to adopt the seal in the world and the only one to develop a collection especially for former colonies.
